What makes great shelf storage?
Steel shelving or racking is an essential in many workplaces. Whether it’s storing medical supplies in a hospital, merchandise in a local shop or files and archives in an office, steel shelving is a neat, simple way to keep everything stored so that it’s simultaneously out of the way and easy to find.
At Midland Steel Equipment, we supply shelving of all shapes and sizes to a variety of businesses across the UK, and so we’ve picked up a thing or two along the way on what makes really great shelf storage. You can read our top tips here.
Get the right size!
Steel shelving and steel racking come in a range of sizes so make sure you properly measure up before ordering. You want to be sure of two things:
- Your chosen shelves fit in the space you want them in.
- Your chosen shelves are big enough for everything you plan to store on them.
Our steel shelving comes in sizes from 3’ x 24” x 9” to 8’ x 48” x 18” so there are plenty of options for you. Of course, size isn’t everything and you also want to make sure your shelves are suitable for the weight you need them to carry. We offer a heavy duty range where each shelf holds up to 100kg, and a light duty range which holds up to 50kg.
Do you have enough shelves?
Your shelf units will come with a standard shelf configuration, but if you need more shelves, you can order these as extras. They come with all the fittings you need so you just need to fit them on the shelving units as needed. This can be great when storing lots of a smaller item, or when you want more shelves on one unit than another.
Keep it steady
You need to make sure your shelving units are safe and secure in order to comply with health and safety regulations. The last thing you want is wobbly shelves that could fall, putting your team at risk.
Accessories such as back braces and corner brackets are essential extras here as they prevent any movement either back and forth or side to side to ensure your steel shelves stay straight and tall without any risk of wobbles. These can be ordered at the time you buy your shelves or even later.
Don’t let anything fall off
Another health and safety issue with shelves can be objects falling off shelves from the sides and potentially injuring people. Another problem can be things falling off the back of the shelf, requiring the unit to be removed in order to retrieve the item. Back and side plates prevent this from happening, making your workplace shelving safer and more practical.
